God I miss the Unicorns

"Islands is a musical band formed in Canada in early 2005, featuring Nick Diamonds (Nicholas Thorburn) on vocals, J'aime Tambeur (Jamie Thompson) on drums, Patrice Agbokou on bass, and at least temporarily, Jim Guthrie on guitar. Islands is a band that is always in flux, with membership changing when appropriate. Most recently two string players, Alex Chow and Sebastian Chow, and a bass clarinetist, Patrick Gregoire, joined the band." - taken from Wikipedia.

My buddy told me about Islands recently , an offshoot of indie favorites the Unicorns. The band keeps it very lighthearted , and poppy for most of the album Return to Sea. All in all its a solid debut but the standout though has to be the track Rough Gem. A song about mining for Diamonds in Africa, or being a diamond, or how people just want everything fast and perfect. It has flutes, it sounds like the long lost theme song for SpongeBob Squarepants if only Spongebob was in fact a diamond. Anyway, Im definitely adding this group to my list of bands to see at SXSW.

In the next few weeks/months/years this blog will serve as a constantly updating menu of mp3 selections of bands/artists you might have heard, you have not heard of , have always wanted to hear, or will hear a lot of very soon.
